President’s Corner

I am a first generation, dual citizen, American. I was born and raised in the Bay Area, but I currently live in Washington State. I started off my career in catering and now work in Event Security for a major tech company. While this pays the bills another benefit of joining UKD was the discovery of my love for creating apparel and other items. I have been fortunate to find a way to tie UKD into my dream of one day sustaining my family on a Greek-life based business of my own.

Why UKD?

Growing up, I had close friends, but I was mostly on my own with two working parents. As an only child and gender non-conforming, I struggled with maintaining female friendships, always feeling like I was watching a party I wasn’t invited to. When it came to the idea of sororities, I had a lot of biased preconceived ideas of what they were, mostly based on sexist 80s movies and I thought sororities were something I’d never become involved with, let alone the National President of one one day.

When I came to Chico State I met the Sisters of UKD through a local Latino Fraternity and I brushed them off with all my preconceived judgments. After moving in with two of the sisters, I discovered a tight knit group of very genuine women. My biases against sororities were shattered and now I proudly share my love for UKD. UKD accepted me as I was, challenged me to become the best version of myself, and gave me the best support network of strong, loyal, and amazing women.

What are your goals for the sorority as National President for your term?

My vision for UKD is a home away from home, a safe space for Sisters to learn and grow, succeed and fail in loving support.  UKD would build up its members by providing sisters with the skill sets that often don’t get included in our current educational system such as conflict management, being genuinely vulnerable, and creating an effective community. We are in the position to create something entirely unique and unseen in the Greek system. For too long we have run our organization by the guides and structures that were taught to us by other orgs, all leading back to White and/or Cis-Male systems. There are no rules or standards by which we have to check the boxes of our organization, so why do we follow the set of measures that we do? As a Women based organization, why are we not following a more collaborative Matriarchal structure like we see in many indigenous communities (of which many of our members belong to as BIPOC women). I think we should explore and innovate a brand new system of operation that focuses on community, openness, and celebrates our diversity and divine femininity.
